Will Norway add the Atlantic puffin to its critically endangered species list in 2026?
Thousands of Atlantic puffins (lundefugl) — one of Norway's most iconic seabirds — have died along the Norwegian coast this winter. Marine biologists at NINA (Norwegian Institute for Nature Research) link the die-off to warming seas in the North Atlantic, which has reduced stocks of sand eels and herring that puffins depend on. Colonies on Røst, Runde, and Lovund (Nordland) have been especially hard hit. Environmental organizations like WWF Norway and Naturvernforbundet are calling for the puffin to be reclassified from 'vulnerable' to 'critically endangered' on the Norwegian Red List. The Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) is expected to review the classification in 2026. Resolves YES if Norway officially reclassifies the Atlantic puffin as critically endangered in 2026.
